TANF

Catholic Charities Maine provides a part time staff person to the TANF Advisory Council, which studies the issues that face citizens who are receiving assistance and makes recommendations to the Commissioner of the Department of Health & Human Services.

TANF is a federal government program that helps families with children in economic need. In Maine, it is run by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The ASPIRE program is the education, training and work program in which most parents receiving TANF are required to participate. People in ASPIRE are eligible for help with transportation, child care and other services necessary to help them participate.

The mission of the TANF Advisory Council is to foster communication among all those interested in Maine’s Welfare Program. When interested organizations, TANF recipients, and the Department of Health & Human Services share information and discuss issues together, new understanding and solutions are found.

The key purpose of the Council is to advise the Department. However, the Council has found that to do that it needs to be well informed so that we can come up with proactive proposals that benefit TANF recipients and help to educate the public.

Topics Addressed by the Council

The following is a sample of topics that have been on recent Council meeting agendas, or that will be discussed on upcoming meeting dates:

  • Sanction Policy
  • Our discussion of many of these issues, such as transportation, domestic violence, and childcare, is ongoing.

Other Council Activities Include:

Regular legislative updates on issues relating to TANF.

We Want to Hear from You

Our job is to advise the Commissioner of Health & Human Services about welfare issues. We need you to help us do that.

We need to hear your ideas, your stories, and your concerns. We want to know about your experiences with the TANF Program so that we can improve the program as much as possible.

What better place to make your voice count? The Commissioner attends meetings several times a year. Have something on your mind? This is your chance to see that he hears about it.

* Transportation and child care expenses may be reimbursed.
