Catholic Charities Maine Celebrated Giving Tuesday with Wall of Warmth Giveaway

November 30, 2023

Portland, ME – Thanks to the generosity of many knitters statewide, Catholic Charities Maine celebrated Giving Tuesday, November 28, 2023, with a free winter hat, mitten, and scarf giveaway in Portland.

To celebrate the global day dedicated to giving, staff and volunteers sorted, packaged, and distributed 900 handmade scarves, mittens, hats, and blankets for anyone who may need extra help staying warm this winter. The event took place at Catholic Charities central administrative office, 307 Congress Street.

“We had a cold and windy Giving Tuesday for our Wall of Warmth giveaway, so the hundreds of hand-knit hats, mittens, scarves, and other items were very welcome. We are so grateful to the dozens of knitters statewide who contributed their hand-made goods,” said Kelly Day, Director of Volunteer Services for Catholic Charities Maine.

“Knitters and crocheters in West Gardiner, Westbrook, Portland, Gray, Biddeford, Paris, Gorham, Hiram, Saco, Buxton, West Bath, South Portland, York, Our Lady of Hope Prayerful Handiwork Ministry in Portland. St. Anne’s Sodality group at St. Hyacinth’s in Westbrook, St. Peter’s Sodality in Portland, and the Hobson’s Landing Knitting Group in Portland made this day possible. Their efforts more than doubled what we collected last year for the Wall of Warmth. It was a great way to share the spirit of the season with those in need,” Day said.
