Immigration Law Volunteer - Bangor area

Key Responsibilities: administrative support with document organization, copying and scanning, basic form preparation (no legal knowledge required), helping the Portland ILS staff and volunteers obtain necessary documentation, and helping Bangor clients complete their green card medical exams/vaccination certifications.

Impact of Opportunity: The Immigration Services program at Catholic Charities Maine Refugee & Immigration Services provides low-cost immigration legal services to low income and indigent refugees, asylees and other immigrants in Southern Maine. This volunteer position will allow the Portland-based team to effectively expand their service to RIS clients in the Bangor area. 

Qualifications & Skills Required: Legal experience, course of study, or past practice preferred but not required, good communication skills and client-centered approach to direct service, comfortable with complex administrative tasks, & language skills a plus.

Training Offered: Quarterly volunteer training; immigration webinars and local trainings. 

Time Commitment Schedule: Flexible. Most work will be conducted M-F, 8:30 to 4:30, with some flexibility to accommodate client's work schedules.

Benefits: Familiarity with refugee resettlement and New Mainer communities, understanding of many aspects of immigration law and practice, direct service contact with refugee, asylee and immigrant clients.
