Primary Classification: refugee, asylee, and other low-income immigrant populations.
Providing immigration legal assistance with applications for green cards, citizenship, and family reunification (among others). Volunteer will meet directly with clients to gather information and documents, prepare forms, organize filing packets, review them with clients, and update client files. Experienced staff and volunteers will provide supervision.
Key Responsibilities: Client Meetings, Forms preparation, Immigration Legal Research, Documenting case progress/case notes
Impact of Opportunity: RIS Legal Services provides low-cost immigration legal services to low income refugees, asylees and immigrants throughout the state of Maine.
Qualifications & Skills Required: Legal experience, course of study, or past practice preferred but not required. Good communication skills and client-centered approach to direct service. Comfortable with complex forms preparation instructions and forms preparation. Computer and Language skills preferred.
Training Offered: Regular volunteer training; Immigration webinars and local trainings
Time Commitment/Schedule: Flexible. Preference is for a set weekly schedule during work week daytime hours, ideally at least 5 hours per week.
Benefits: Familiarity with refugee resettlement and New Mainer communities. Understanding of many aspects of immigration law and practice. Direct service contact with refugee, asylee, and immigrant clients.
