Statement re: Executive Order regarding Realigning the United States Refugee Admissions Program

January 22, 2025

Portland, ME -- In response to the recent executive order temporarily pausing the resettlement program until a 90-day review can take place, Catholic Charities Maine (CCM), Director of Migration, Charles Mugabe states that the Agency remains committed to working with the refugee population already here in Maine and providing services to eligible clients per state/federal guidelines.

“Our focus right now is on continuing to support our current refugee clients, many who are eligible for services for up to five years from their arrival date, and to be prepared for whatever new arrivals may come following this pause, Mugabe notes.”

“With refugees subject to the highest level of security checks of any traveler to the United States, we trust the new administration will recognize that keeping America safe and welcoming refugees are not mutually exclusive,” states CEO Steve Letourneau.

Catholic Charities Maine has a nearly 50-year history of providing refugee resettlement services in Maine. “Our efforts are guided by Catholic social teaching to work for justice and care for the oppressed, and it is something we are 100% committed to carrying on in collaboration with the federal government and our long-standing partners in this important work,” Letourneau adds.
