Portland, Maine – In an inspiring display of community spirit and generosity, volunteers and knitters alike from all corners of the state united to support Catholic Charities Maine’s Giving Tuesday initiative.
On December 3rd, 2024, the organization distributed 1,000 free winter items, including handmade blankets, hats, mittens, and scarves, to those in need. The distribution took place in front of their central administrative office at 307 Congress Street in Portland.
This is the 6th year that Catholic Charities Maine has provided winter gear to adults and children who need a little extra help staying warm through the cold winters. Dedicated staff and volunteers sorted and packaged the donated items, making it as easy as possible for people to find exactly what they need.
We want to highlight the statewide effort that made this event possible, with immense gratitude to our talented knitters and crocheters from these Maine towns:
Biddeford, Gorham, Gray, Houlton, Kennebunk, Matinicus, Phippsburg, Portland, Saco, Scarborough, South Portland, Westbrook, West Gardiner, and West Bath.
“We have about 1,000 items to hand out this year, including clothing and blankets” says Kelly Day, Director of Volunteer Services. “We are so grateful to our knitters, crocheters, and volunteers around Maine. There are so many people wanting to keep others warm. It is a blessing!”
