The volunteer position with the Office of Maine Refugee Services will be assisting case managers with searching for and securing housing for our newcomer refugee population.

Responsibilities

• Finding available housing units for rent that are within an affordable price
• Talking to landlord/property managers about renting to a refugee tenant
• Showing a unit to a refugee individual/family 

Securing housing has become a real challenge for our case managers and resettlement agencies, and by helping them in the search for it, the Housing Helpers will contribute greatly to the successful resettlement of an individual to Maine.

Qualifications 

• Familiarity with housing marketplace websites (Apartments.com, Facebook Marketplace, Zillow, etc.)
• Rough knowledge of Portland, Lewiston/Auburn, Waterville areas 
• Patience and Determination
• Works currently or formerly as a licensed real estate agent (not required, but encouraged)

Training offered:

Introduction to Refugee Asylum in Maine, Refugee Housing Needs 

Time commitment is flexible, ideally Housing Helpers can commit 4 hours a week split between two days. Volunteer hours preferably between 9am to 5 pm.
